pinkbanner300I do love music and wanted to feature some on our Daily Adventure Tales podcasts. But honestly, not only could I not afford the licensing fees for the Beatles, The Who and Pink Floyd, I was also stuck in a listening rut of my favorite music from the 60s and 70s. I didn’t know where to turn until I started to explore and found the resources below. These sites opened my eyes to traditional folk music, historical music and the fun of indie artists making their art. It never fails to brighten my day or to make me feel more creative when I search for new songs or sounds, so I decided to share this list in the hope that you can have fun exploring music and sound too.

  1. Free Music Archive
    http://freemusicarchive.org

The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads. The Free Music Archive is directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet. – from Free Music Archive.org’s about page

This is my mainstay for searching for new music by theme for the Daily Adventure Tales Podcast.

  2. Kevin MacLeod
    http://incompetech.com/

Hat’s off to Kevin MacLeod, a composer, who releases many scores under creative commons licenses or for very reasonable fees for non-royalty use. Encourages creativity while sharing his own gift. Pass it on. Good on you Kevin, Sir. The Daily Adventure Tales podcast Will feature his rousing score Call to Adventure in this week’s episode 14.

  3. Sound Cloud
    https://soundcloud.com/

Sound Cloud is an audio stream of consciousness! If you are a musician, podcaster, or sound creator, you can upload your audio for free. Folks visiting Sound Cloud can visit your stream, mark as favorite items you’ve posted or other pieces of audio that you’ve listened to. It’s like an ongoing music and sound blog! What you listen to or post floats to the top of the stream. You can follow streams and be followed. I love the free-form ideas it generates for me. Check out my stream to see what I’ve listened to lately.

  4. AudioBoo
    http://audioboo.fm/

AudioBoo is like Twitter for short form audio. For free accounts, instead of 140 characters, you can record up to 3 minutes per audio piece, called a “Boo” from phones, from uploading, from apps etc. Again, like Twitter, you have a profile and dedicated page for your “Boos”. You can favorite Boos or follow posters. My first Boo is a Halloween Poem I did for the Daily Adventure Tales’ Halloween Episode.
I read “Ah, Are You Digging My Grave?” by Thomas Hardy.
This performance, for good, or for evil, is also featured as part of the
The Halloween Feed show: Spooktacular Podcast Brew a podcast compilation show from the offical podcast of Libsyn.

    My AudioBoo profile is https://audioboo.fm/AdventureLaurie

  5. http://www.freesound.org/
    http://www.freesound.org/

FreeSound.org is where I find all of my sound effects and music loops for the podcast. It’s a spot where sound makers upload their Sounds in the spirit of sharing. You do have to register to download, but it’s free. You can also comment on a sound. Some sound creators ask for attribution if you use their sounds, others allow all use. It is especially fun to read in the notes of sounds how they were made. Thanks Sound Creators! I think I might try recording some SFX as well. That might make a fine adventure!
