Adventure Question: Can you decide to be lucky? Whatever your answer, have a mini-adventure to test it out and come back to tell the tale.
Can one decide to be lucky and from that point of view, will lucky things happen?
I tested out this question yesterday. I did my usual hike – lucky. But I went later in the day when it was too darn hot – unlucky. I always feel lucky when I see lizards and hot weather brings them out – lucky. Here’s my multimedia account – lucky/unlucky – what do you think?
I decide to make the best of my hot hike. – lucky
I stalk many lizards with limited results – unlucky
Some that I do photograph are like chameleons and blend into their rocks. – lucky/unlucky
Surprise! I don’t catch a lizard – unlucky
But If I hadn’t already been running my video, I wouldn’t have gotten this close to the swarming butterflies – lucky!
I sneak up on the Daddy of all lizards – lucky
I’m about to sit down and have a nice drink of water at my thinking place. – lucky
Wow, loved seeing those lizards – really lucky!
Went home, thought I’d have the luckiest day in the world after that. However, each and every piddling, irritating, stupid thing that could go wrong did go wrong. – unlucky, unlucky, UNLUCKY!
But at the end of the day, my husband and I had the longest, most heartfelt talk that we’ve had for years about our lives, our love and this blog. He calls it me discovering myself and says that is the most import thing of all.

So what do you think? Did the lizards get it right? How much of our luck comes from our attitude?
THAT, my dear, is a question I’ve pondered long and hard. Is it karma? Is it the “luck” of the draw (or the IRISH, since it’s St. Paddy’s Day today)? Is it something you are born with or is it something you have to cultivate. Perhaps being lucky is a lot like practicing an attitude of gratitude, a positive mindset that allows your soul to be open to the good things the universe has to offer you, or your hands to be open to receive the wonderful opportunities with which God wants to fill them. The only thing I know for sure is that neither of those things can happen when our hands are balled up in fists at our sides in anger. We really have to be ready to receive, imo, and that’s a heck of a lot harder than it sounds, I think. Though I think it’s a very necessary lesson for this angry world to learn if we’re not going to annihilate ourselves…

Wow, thanks so much for this. I shared with this on point sentiment with DH on the way home from our bike ride yesterday. His first ride since his accident. He is so angry about having to delay his plans due to his injury and at life in general because of the very challenging last few years (including losing his mom, dad and little brother). He is really trying to open up and change and I’m proud of him. I’m trying to change too, because anger can be a cancer. Reactive rage blots out reason, love and hope and I no longer want to have little, silly inconveniences rule my outlook. Love you gal and hope with all my heart that some day, we will meet in RL too.
I think you can make your own luck but I am also a firm believer in sometimes things just go the right way. How’s that for a none-answer. and I’m sure I should know this but where do you live that you are hot and have swarming butterflies???
I’m in southern California by the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena. I love the sunny weather usually, but I’m originally from the NW and prefer a more gentle heat. The butterflies must have been due to all of the wild flowers that are springing up in the foothills. Beautiful!
Where in the NW? There was snow on my car this a.m. in Portland so careful what you wish for!
I’m a Tacoman – isn’t it strange how that is the same as Taco Man? Had relatives in Vancouver so Portland is also a former stomping ground. Great place, and very bike-friendly.
